My wife and I have a car that breaks down periodically because of overheating. When it does, people stop to offer assistance. This particular time, a man advised that we put the heater on full blast to draw heat away from the engine.
While this may work with other cars, it made the thermostat go up, having the opposite effect. Turning the heating system on high strained the engine, more than replacing the heat that was drained by running the fan.
It is interesting to note, thought, that the temperature gauge would immediately rise and fall with the heater speed; turn the heater on, the needle rises: turn it off, the needle falls. Where is the temperature sensor such that the needle would move so synchronously?
